Bedford Network …. the building begins

We are currently rebuilding our website with lots of exciting changes to come.

And so our website is now trimmed down ready for changes.

legohouseThe building begins!

Tea-Zels – the cafe in the park

We are owning up – yes we do have lives outside of Bedford and sometimes venture into that wonderful world out there!

The idea of Bedford Network is to whisper in your ear and to share our top tips on places that we think are the very best.  And Tea-Zels Café at Harrold Country Park, just a few miles north of Bedford, is one of our favourites.

Here you can gaze out across the beautiful country park, take a walk through meadows, feed the ducks and think about riding a bike!  Lots of keen cyclists were meeting at the park when we visited.

Tea-Zels has a scrumptious menu, including home-made cakes and so much more.  And now they have opened their “shed” selling take-outs.  So you can either sit inside the log cabin or outside on the decked area (our favourite) or get yourself a take-out to enjoy in the park.

Thanks Sue, Nikki and Ali.  Your coffee is fantastic – and we are fussy about coffee!   We always feel better after taking time out at Tea-Zels.

Tea-Zels is at Harrold and Odell Country Park, Carlton Road, Harrold, MK43 7DS.  Tel 01234 721525.

Rachel Benton interview – fitness unravelled

Bedford is fit – we all know that!  Rachel Benton Associates is inspiring many of you to get fit and others will have heard the buzz around town from group classes and personal training to pilates and bootcamp.

We talked to Rachel Benton about her fitness company, the benefits of fitness and those who have inspired her along the way.

Read on and you may be inspired to join a fitness class or experience the adrenalin rush of bootcamp!

Fitness has a part in everyone’s lives

Fitness means something different to everyone and so the one size fits all of joining a gym and hoping for the best doesn’t always work. Finding something you enjoy and want to go back to again and again is the key to exercising consistently and for good.  It could be exercise classes, running club, a sporting club, dance class, rock climbing – the list goes on, be open minded!

Benefits of fitness

In every client consultation the client and trainer set out and agree goals and timeframes to achieve them in. We can measure goals and progress with scales, tape measures, Body Fat calipers and fitness tests but eventually a client will start saying things like “I feel so much better”, “I am looking good” or “ I have so much more energy and I feel alive again”!  So apart from the obvious health benefits of regular exercise and fitness…looking good and feeling great has got to be a good way to live your life.

Bootcamp lowdown

If you are not a morning person forget it!  A 6am start and outdoors with the great British weather  and Embankment geese could be a bit too much for you!  If on the other hand you love the great outdoors, hate being in a sweaty gym, love working your body in a varied, clever fatburning way (which is sometimes hard but mostly fun) then you`ll love Bootcamp.  The content constantly changes but always focuses on training drills that work the whole body. You`ll find plenty of ever popular HIIT drills (High Intensity Interval Training) that help deliver the golden increase in metabolic rate after your work out, a truly great crowd of friendly and supportive people and nothing to be afraid of.

Inspiration along the way

The original and best London based celebrity Personal Trainer Mat Roberts, cool and professional, progressive in approach, not sold on fad or hype, knows his and a lot of other onions, interested in the individual and a nice guy.  More locally I am ever inspired by Bedford Harrier Iva Barr, Olympic torch bearer, marathon runner, triathlete and still going strong in her eighties – no excuses!

Bedford is buzzing

I didn’t specifically choose to come to Bedford to build my fitness business but it has turned out to be a great place to do so. Compared to many towns Bedford has so much to offer in the way of sports, health and fitness for adults and children and if you dig around it is amazing how much variety there is. I’m not from Bedford but it is clear local folk are proud of their town and are keen to push forward with great initiatives that benefit and build a community, it is great to be a part of that and offer something unique to a buzzing town.

East Wing Fitness Studio

Our Fitness Studio is in the basement of a historic building so it has the special feel that historic places have and it is difficult to ignore the remainders of the basements original use, the original forge, rifle racks, and blacksmiths nails still in the shelves all make the space pretty different and proudly not much like a gym. I deliberately white washed the brick walls to create a blank canvas for Rock City Art of Castle Lane to hang some of their work, also add in some forward thinking training equipment specific to training the body functionally and effectively and you have a cool space to think and get fit in.

Taking the first step to get fit

Most people are afraid to start something new no matter what it is. Understandable really and especially so when you are asking someone to potentially use some coordination, and perform a series of bizarre looking moves that apparently will tone your backside etc. All of that before the question of what do I wear? And once in the chosen workout attire probably then thinking “I look ridiculous, I can’t stand in a room full of lycra lovelies looking like this!”.

No matter what I or any instructor says you could well go through all that, so be brave take the first step and pick up the phone and your instructor should put you at ease straight away. You might just enjoy your exercise class with us.

Frescoes Coffee House – make your own coffee in barista style

Kevin Kavanagh, owner of Frescoes Coffee House, is keen to push the boundaries of the coffee world and bring new ideas to Bedford.  From the fresco on the side of Frescoes and the first to sign up for “suspended coffees”, he is now launching a personal barista promotion.

At a Coffee Festival in Brick Lane, London, showcasing artisan suppliers, he was impressed by the quality and ingenuity of an espresso coffee maker that is designed and engineered in London.

The ROK Espresso Maker is not only beautiful but has the advantage of being mechanical rather than electrical.  It can be moved around easily to where coffee is needed, either in the home or on picnics.  Pop into Frescoes and see it for yourself.

Frescoes coffee promotion offers the ROK Espresso Maker and personal barista training from Kevin at an exclusive price of £120, together with 0.5 kilo of ground coffee.

To celebrate 10 years at Frescoes Coffee House, free raffle tickets will also be offered to customers in June for the winning prize of a ROK Espresso Maker and personal training.  The winner will be announced on 5 July (Kevin’s birthday).

Kevin Kavanagh, owner of Frescoes Coffee House, said:

“People often talk to me about having bought an expensive coffee machine, only to find that the end product doesn’t match up to expectations.  There is an art to coffee making and to make the best coffee you need more than a coffee machine – personal barista training is the secret ingredient.  When all the elements come together it’s what I call the “sweet spot” of coffee making.”

Coffee is one of life’s pleasures – this promotion combines an incredible coffee machine with training and expertise to make you into your own barista!

We’re thinking this is the perfect present!  Yes please

Deep Shine Watch Collection from Swatch

Ok, ok so this has nothing to do with Bedford, forgive us!  But we thought we would develop our website a little.  We will still be letting you know about all our best experiences in Bedford, but we will also let you know our top tips on other things too…

…like these fab watches from Swatch.

I wanted something bright to instantly add to outfits and this does the job nicely.  It’s bright, it’s glittery, it’s just sublime!

They do a range of colours all for £38 check them out on the Swatch website here.

Breakfast at Andaluz

Andaluz on Castle Road in Bedford is a superb Spanish tapas restaurant and deli.

They now serve breakfasts on Saturday mornings 10.00-12.30.  I popped along after seeing a snap shot of mouthwatering goodness on their Facebook page which I just couldn’t resist!  As soon as you dip into Anduluz you succumb to the chilled atmosphere and for a blissful little time you can believe you are in a Spanish bar (and not sat on Castle Rd!).  I chose to have Crispy Bacon & Guacomole on Toasted Sourdough

…. it was delicious!

The breakfast menu is simply Spanish scrumptiousness, including:

Serrano Ham & Cheese Panini
Chorizo & Cheese Panini
Goat Cheese & Sundried Tomato Panini
Slice of Tortilla with Alioli
Andaluz Style Toast with Tomato & Oil
Churros & Dipping Chocolate

All for under £4 and add a coffee for just £1.

In the evening rock up here to have a lovely supper of Spanish tapas, wine and beer.  Or chill at one of the high tables which are reserved just for you casual drinkers.  Try out some of their sherry too, which is quite addictive!  (You can find out more about Andaluz and Sherry on Brian’s guest blog here.)

Top Tip: Look out for their monthly music event (first Thursday of the month) which will get your feet tapping while keeping those taste buds buzzing too.

Enigma of Alan Turing at Bletchley Park

Walk in the footsteps of Bedford people who worked at Bletchley Park in WW2, keeping the secret of their roles all their lives.

Bletchley Park still holds many mysteries, including the life of Alan Turing, whose work on the Enigma code breaking machine is said to be basis of modern computing.

Here you can see one of the Enigma machines and wartime mini cinema along with everything from wartime toys to working computers.

Mathematician, wartime code-breaker and pioneer of computer science, Alan Turing was the inspirational genius at the heart of Bletchley Park’s codebreaking successes during World War Two.

An incredible statue at Bletchley Park celebrates the pivotal role Alan Turing made in World War Two.

The world’s first stacked slate statue is life size, one and a half ton and made from around half a million individual pieces of five hundred million year old Welsh slate.   Artist Stephen Kettle was inspired to use Welsh slate after learning that Alan Turing visited Wales often as a child and adult.

Despite Turing’s pivotal role in the war effort in 1952 he was arrested for being a homosexual.  His punishment was appalling and as a result of this he took his own life with a bite of an apple laced with cyanide.

A special tribute to Alan Turing may well be staring you in the face. Although never officially acknowledged, the Apple computer logo is often presumed to be not a reference to Adam and Eve, or even Sir Isaac Newton, but to the sad death of – and great debt owed to – Alan Turing.
